CSDi Project Profile: Yemen Health, Nutrition and Water Project
Yemeni families in the Al Sharkiyah village enjoy better health and increased opportunity for participation in education and income-generating activities through a clean water project.

Location: Rural village of Al Sharkiyah twenty km from Hodeidah City near Red Sea.
Google Earth View and Map View: See map at bottom of page.
Beneficiaries: 500 families: 5000 people

The Challenge

Chronic ill health among 500 families in Al Sharkiyah village caused by a lack of knowledge of sanitation and hygiene and a scarcity of safe water. Women have to trek for several hours a day in danger of attack by neighboring men—in search of water. These challenges reduce the ability for 1,000 children to attend school & for adults to lead the productive lives necessary for leaving the cycle of poverty.

Help 500 families regain their health and have access to fresh water

Contribute to a health, hygiene and safe water project for 500 families in Yemen’s impoverished Hodeidah district. The program will help the families gain knowledge of good hygiene practices and gain access to fresh water allowing their 1,000 children to become healthy enough to attend & excel in school. 500 families will begin the rise out of poverty through leading healthy, productive lives.

Help 142 families improve nutrition through a family garden project.
“I am happy to inform you that our Food Security project is progressing well. 140 families are actively participating and the kitchen gardens are doing very well. Indeed I had said that I am based in a desert along a coastline at the Red Sea. However, with time I came to realize that there are some limited areas close to the mountains that could actually support home gardening  activities. The challenge of course is water and this has to be factored in.

So in the Food security project we went into the Ashoukhna district and conduced a needs assessment; in August we started the implementation. The project ends by the end of this month (November) since it was a 5 month project. However, we will look for other partners who can support another phase of the project.” Joseph Aloo. See a 5-page summary of the family garden project.
