Water & Sanitation Main Menu

Children are the future of development. We need for them to grow up healthy and strong and mentally acute if as adults they are going to contribute to the development of their communities.

According to the World Health Organization, diarrheal disease kills an estimated 1.8 million people each year, the majority of whom are under five years of age - accounting for approximately 20% of all deaths for children under five. The majority of these deaths occur between the ages of six months and three years of age.

Randomized trials show point-of-use water filters reduce diarrhea 40% to 50%, latrines 36%. Community Water Systems studies find little evidence of health impacts. Expensive, they may provide contaminated water & fall into disrepair. Providing piped water and sanitation infrastructure can reduce child mortality, however, it is expensive to develop in rural communities, and potentially difficult to maintain.
